French recruit Be Fabulous will be Godolphin's only representative in Friday's Sportingbet Yorkshire Cup after Sheikh Mohammed's team decided against running Opinion Poll.

Opinion Poll has won twice on the Knavesmire and was expected to return this week following his victory in the Dubai Gold Cup on World Cup night at Meydan in March.

However, trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni will instead saddle Be Fabulous, who was last seen winning the Group One Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp in October for Andre Fabre.

Al Zarooni said: "Opinion Poll is OK, we have just decided to give him more time. He came back from Dubai and it just takes a bit of time for horses to acclimatise after arriving back in Britain.

"We will now get him ready for something else and there are many options for him. His main target is the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but we would like to run him somewhere before then as he needs a race."

Be Fabulous is one of eight declarations for the Group Two contest, with William Haggas saddling last month's impressive Newbury winner Harris Tweed.

The John Gosden-trained Arctic Cosmos is on a recovery mission after tailing off in the same race, while Red Cadeaux aims for a deserved victory for Ed Dunlop following narrow defeats in the Melbourne Cup, the Hong Kong Vase and, most recently, at Kempton.

Blue Bajan, Electrolyser, Glen's Diamond and Times Up complete the field.

Set To Music returns to the scene of her biggest triumph when she begins her 2012 campaign in the Betfred Middleton Stakes at York on Thursday.

The Queen's filly won the Listed Galtres Stakes at the Ebor meeting in August and trainer Michael Bell has had this Group Two contest in mind as a starting point for her for some time - even though the extended mile and a quarter may be slightly short of her best.

Bell said: "It's always been the intention to start her off in this race. Obviously the drying ground is not ideal for her, but I expect her to come on for the run and hopefully it will set her up for the year. It looks a warm contest, but she's in good form."

Fellow Newmarket-based trainer Luca Cumani has decided to give Mohedian Lady her first run of the year in this race, rather than take her to Ireland.

"Mohedian Lady runs in the Middleton Stakes in preference to the Blue Wind Stakes at Naas," read a statement posted on www.lucacumani.com.

"She has been training very well - better in fact than she did last year. Given that she also looks to have improved physically over the winter then we could see an improved filly this year - though it has to be said that this is a warm race and ideally we'd have been happier had it been at a mile and a half."

Richard Fahey is looking for a better performance from Barefoot Lady than on her seasonal reappearance when she got bogged down in the testing conditions at Goodwood. He also runs Myplacelater but warned the five-year-old mare may not take her chance if the ground quickens up.

Fahey said: "Barefoot Lady was a little bit disappointing on very heavy ground at Goodwood, but she's fine. If the ground dries out much more Myplacelater probably won't run now, but we'll have a look at how the ground is after Wednesday's meeting."

Connections of Beatrice Aurore want the opposite to improve her prospects. The four-year-old, trained by John Dunlop, made an encouraging return when third to Questioning at Newmarket last month.

"Beatrice Aurore has trained well since the Earl Of Sefton and we are hopeful of a good run, especially if the rain stays away," said Dunlop's racing secretary Marcus Osgood.

The Andrew Balding-trained Bonfire heads the betting for Thursday's Betfred Dante Stakes at York.

A winner at Salisbury on debut before finishing a luckless third in the Group One Criterium International last term, he was due to make his seasonal reappearance in the Dee Stakes at Chester last week but connections decided conditions were too testing.

Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said: "I saw Bonfire on Monday and he looked in great condition. He has been training well and this race will tell us where we stand. Hopefully it will be the route that takes us to Epsom."

Herbert added: "We always thought that a track like York would suit him, but we were worried that with only 16 days between the Dante and the Derby that if we ran at Chester then we may have a bit more time.

"However, the very deep ground at Chester prevented him from running so we rerouted to York as he is ready to run and needs the racing experience for the Derby."

Mahmood Al Zarooni expects to find out whether Mandaean is a realistic Investec Derby contender by running him in the Betfred Dante Stakes at York on Thursday.

This prestigious Group Two contest is widely considered the best of the British trials for next month's Epsom showpiece, with Authorized the last horse to complete the double in 2007.

Mandaean certainly looked the part on his two juvenile appearances for Andre Fabre, making an impressive debut at Longchamp before grabbing Group One honours in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud. He makes his Godolphin debut on the Knavesmire, but his trainer admits he does not know the full capabilities of his exciting colt.

Al Zarooni said: "He has done well and is ready to go. Hopefully, this run can get him ready for the Derby if he is good enough. I don't really know how good he is yet. He won his Group One as a two-year-old so he is a nice horse and he is in good form. It was very soft when he won his Group One, but I think good ground might be even better for him."

It was a slight surprise to see Mickael Barzalona booked for the mount, rather than number one Godolphin jockey Frankie Dettori.

Al Zarooni said: "We are letting Mickael ride because we want to give him chance to get used to the English style of racing. In France, the racing is very different as they go slow and then speed it up. There should be plenty of pace in the Dante and it is a good chance for him to learn more."

Roger Varian's Ektihaam doesn't even have a Derby entry, but he was impressive enough on his seasonal return in a conditions race at Newbury to earn a tilt at what is a valuable prize in its own right.

Varian said: "After winning at Newbury quite impressively, I think he deserves his place in a race like this. It was only a small field but he had to give weight to everything and he pulled right away to win by five lengths. I think a galloping 10 furlongs at York will suit him well and I'm looking forward to running him.

"I don't think conditions will be a problem to him. He obviously coped with softer ground well at Newbury, but the ground isn't going to dry out to firm and I'm sure he'll be fine. I wouldn't even speculate about where we'll go next with him."

Trainer Roger Varian has yet to finalise a comeback plan for his star filly Nahrain.

The three-year-old enjoyed a fantastic season in 2011, completing a four-timer in the Group One Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp before suffering defeat for the first time when narrowly beaten in the Breeders' Cup Filly And Mare Turf.

"We haven't made any concrete plan for her yet, but she's fine and working away nicely," said Varian.

"We are conscious that the important fillies' races are in the second half of the season, so we've not been in any rush with her.

"She'll probably start off somewhere in the next few weeks, but quite where that will be, I'm not sure at this stage."

Christophe Soumillon has ended his association with Dabirsim following the colt's defeat in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp on Sunday.

The Belgian jockey told Paris-Turf that he lacked "chemistry" with the Christophe Ferland-trained three-year-old, who won two Group Ones for Frankie Dettori in an unbeaten juvenile campaign.

Soumillon has twice been out of luck aboard Dabirsim, who finished sixth in the French Classic at the weekend after he encountered desperate trouble in running.

"I called the owner Simon Springer on Tuesday morning and I explained to him that I would prefer not to ride Dabirsim anymore," said Soumillon.

"I have gone over my two rides on him and I don't think I've made any big mistakes but you have to look at the facts.

"For some reason which I can't explain, I don't seem to get on with the colt.

"I'm not superstitious but the results speak for themselves - the chemistry isn't there between us. Regarding the horse and his connections, I think it's best for me to step aside and hope that the next jockey can help him rediscover his sparkle.

"I was very frustrated with how things turned out on Sunday and it's best not to continue."

Gordon Elliott and Davy Russell were the ones to follow in the jump races at Killarney as they notched a double with two Gigginstown-owned newcomers to fences in Carlito Brigante and His Excellency.

Carlito Brigante, not seen since being pulled up in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, a race he won in 2011, looked a useful recruit as he easily landed the O'Keeffe O'Shea O'Connor Solicitors Novice Chase.

Russell kept him just off the pace and asserted on the run to the last, which the 2-1 favourite jumped superbly before easing clear to beat Catcherinscratcher by seven and a half lengths.

The trainer said: "He was entitled to win that on his hurdle rating. Nothing went right for him last season. He had a wind op after his first run and had to have stitches after Cheltenham.

"It's nice to get him back on track. He'll be kept going during the summer and then left off after the Cheltenham meeting in October."

His Excellency isn't the easiest of rides, but Russell knows him well from his exploits in the hurdling sphere and was able to persuade him to put his best foot forward in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase.

The 7-1 shot wasn't asked for an effort until after the final fence, which he jumped alongside Cass Bligh, and though he went into his familiar tail-swishing routine, he forged clear nicely to score by two and a quarter lengths.

The trainer said: "He was getting the four-year-old allowance and was a Grade Two winner (over hurdles). He jumped great and Davy gave him a class ride. He'll mix it between hurdles and chases for the summer and will probably run next in a novice chase."

Louis Archdeacon's well-backed Mountain Lough (5-1 joint-favourite) got the better of long-time leader Torremuelle on the run to the last in the Killarney Outlook Handicap Chase and was kept up to his work by Andrew McNamara to win by three and a half lengths.

The winning pointer was landing his first success under Rules at the age of eight, and the trainer said: "He lost his confidence over fences and point-to-pointing did the trick with him. He possibly wasn't staying three miles, though."

Jockey Jamie Spencer shrugged off a bad fall on the eve of York's Dante meeting by claiming a winner at Beverley.

The 2005 champion jockey must have feared for his participation at the big three-day fixture on the Knavesmire once he was unseated from Panama Cat in the opening five-furlong maiden.

Spencer fleetingly remained motionless on the turf, but he was later declared fit enough to take his three remaining mounts, of which Bridgehampton was a game winner of the Beverley Middle Distance Series Handicap.

The Michael Bell-trained three-year-old was never too far off a stop-start pace initiated by Henry George and galloped earnestly clear two furlongs out. Cheviot Quest briefly threatened, but succumbed by four lengths to the 3-1 favourite, who was stepping up to a mile and a half for the first time in his short career.

Spencer said: "I'm a bit sore, but I'm OK (for York). It was a bad race, but his dam is a half-sister to Fame And Glory and he was always going to improve for the step up in trip."

Mick Easterby is another for whom the Dante meeting cannot come quickly enough as Hoof It is set to run in the Duke Of York Stakes. The sprinter is owned by golfer Lee Westwood and his agent 'Chubby' Chandler, who were on the scoresheet with On The Hoof in the Nosebag Cafeteria Maiden Stakes.

The grey (14-1) hugged the far rail in the hands of Paul Mulrennan to take the not inconsiderable scalp of 5-6 favourite Courage by a nose, and Chandler later tweeted that he had backed the winner in a treble along with Hoof It and Hoofalong, who runs in a York maiden.

Ian McInnes was celebrating when Top Notch Tonto struck in the TurfTV Betting Shop Service Maiden Stakes. The chestnut was fourth over course and distance last Monday and despite his trainer's fears this assignment could be a bridge too far, Paddy Mathers' mount showed a shift of gear to win by a length and a half.

McInnes said of the 17-2 winner: "My worry was I'd rushed him after last week, but I knew he'd appreciate the ground. I think he'll get further than five furlongs, but I don't know what we'll do with him now."

Made In The Shade (5-1) and jockey Amy Ryan coped best with a challenging crosswind to take the Fantastic Prizes At Lucky In Love Selling Stakes. Paul Midgley's inmate went for broke three furlongs out and never really looked like being overtaken by favourite Red Shadow, who was half a length away.
